Laying the Foundation

Thomas Mahaffey Jr. began his career in real estate development in the 1940s with a simple, straightforward approach: Develop quality apartment communities at attainable rates through cost-conscious construction and strategic partnerships. After relocating from Indiana to Florida in 1962, Mahaffey became one of the most prolific multifamily developers in the state, creating over 11,000 apartment homes. His commitment to value and resident satisfaction has consistently strengthened occupancy rates and established a legacy that continues today.

Building & Expanding

The next chapter of Mahaffey Apartment Company was shaped by the leadership of Thomas Mahaffey Jr.'s sons, Jim and Mark Mahaffey. Inspired by their father's vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Jim joined the company in 1962, playing a vital role in the development, construction, and management of Carlton Towers, the first Mahaffey apartment community, as well as the expanding portfolio of Carlton Arms Communities. In 1969, Mark joined the family business after serving as a U.S. Naval officer, becoming involved in every aspect of community development and operations.
